Abstract
Taking my cue from the pages J.N. Adams devotes to word order in the verb phrase Modal+Infinitive [Social Variation and the Latin Language, Cambridge 2013], I take into consideration some texts belonging to the epistolary genre (Ambrose's and Jerome's letters), a genre which programmatically aims to be a sermo absentium, a ‘dialogue’ between people who are far away from each other. Word order in the above mentioned verb phrase should be probably be related to 'compositional orality', in that 'informal' order prevails when texts are dictated.Pubblicazioni consigliate
