Il filo della memoria. Il carteggio Banfi-Martinetti

The historical interest in the biography and personality of the Italian philosopher Piero Martinetti (1872-1943) has intensified in recent decades. An important contribution is the recent publication of the volume P. Martinetti, Letters (1919-1942), edited by Pier Giorgio Zunino (Olschki publisher, Florence, 2011). A partial gap, in this volume, is the lack of correspondence between Martinetti and Antonio Banfi (1886-1957), his most famous disciple. This gap can now be filled by the discovery, among the papers of Banfi, of a group of 11 letters, ranging from 1911 to 1941. This paper traces, through these letters, the biographical relations between these two personalities, united by anti-fascism and sincere friendship, although separated from different theoretical approach (Martinetti's religious idealism in comparison of Banfi's critical rationalism).
