Open metalorganic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely studied as adsorbents of gases or small molecules for potential applications in gas storage/separation processes, heterogeneous catalysis or drug delivery. In this communication, we present the new MOF [Ni8(m4-OH)4(m4-OH2)2(m4-1,4-bispyrazolatobut-1,3-diine)6]n (1) as an interesting candidate for controlled drug delivery purposes. Indeed, this highly porous and stable material has n octahedral cavities of 2.2 nm diameter and 2n tetrahedral cavities of 1 nm diameter, thus permitting the incorporation of bulky guest molecules. In this work, we show the incorporation of the non-conventional metallodrug [Ru(p-cymene)Cl2(pta)] (pta=1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphoadamantane), RAPTA-C, displaying in vivo anticancer activity, into 1. We have proved that the drug can enter the MOF cavities reaching a maximum of four RAPTA-C molecules for MOF formula unit (1.1 g of drug per g of MOF).
