The article aims at tracing a survey of the publishing houses working on technical handbooks for high school in Italy after the unification. The narrow boundaries between handbooks for specialised workers and schoolbooks is one of the main topic of the work. In the end, the article proposes a short history of the work by three publishing houses in this field: Hoepli, Francesco Vallardi and Giovanni Massa
