The essay deals with Charles Dickens's second journey to Italy, which has been seldom investigated. It describes the political context of Italy in 1853 and it makes use of letters which stress the uncanny feelings generated by the author's second visit. His gaps in memory, the shocks of recognition, his feelings of loss and strange threatening impressions of déja-vu will resurface in the novel Little Dorrit with its stereoscopic structure in which the 'before' and the 'after' are mutually mirrored and the images of the Italian ancient ruins belong to the perception of modern London.

Abstract
The essay deals with Charles Dickens's second journey to Italy, which has been seldom investigated. It describes the political context of Italy in 1853 and it makes use of letters which stress the uncanny feelings generated by the author's second visit. His gaps in memory, the shocks of recognition, his feelings of loss and strange threatening impressions of déja-vu will resurface in the novel Little Dorrit with its stereoscopic structure in which the 'before' and the 'after' are mutually mirrored and the images of the Italian ancient ruins belong to the perception of modern London.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
