The purpose of this study is to describe a particular diagnostic and therapeutical method for correction of open-bite skeletal class III deformity. Twenty-seven patients were divided into two groups: the first included 17 patients, 4 men and 13 women, aged 18 to 35 years. They had orthognatic surgery performed at the end of the growth period. He second group consisted of 10 patients, 6 male and 4 female, aged 6 to 14 years. They were treatd only orthodontically. The treatment consists in presurgical-orthodontics to eliminate dental compensation of skeletal discrepancies, to align the teeth and to coordinate arch forms. Electromyography and kinesyography as done at the beginning and the end to evaluate the treatment results. In the first group we had excellent result with regard to aesthetic dental, skeletal, neuro-muscular and functional aspects. In the second group, the aesthetic-morphologic result was very good, although the skeletal open-bite was only corrected partially. It is concluded that the anomaly can best be treated at the end of the growth spurt with a combined surgical-orthodontic approach.
