Variazioni enigmatiche per Apollonio di Tiro

In the Historia Apollonii regis Tyri, latin novel of the late antiquity taking place on the eastern coasts of the Mediterranean Sea, riddles play a central role, disguising the identity or the story of the characters and at the same time revealing them. The various translations of the text into romance languages throughout the Midde Ages show us different ways to adapt ancient riddles to the new public, sometimes making them easier to understand, sometimes increasing their obscurity. Besides the riddles, however, it’s possible to point out in the story many other shapes of enigmatic communication, often grasped and cleverly reworked by medieval translators.

La Historia Apollonii regis Tyri, romanzo tardo latino ambientato sulle coste del mediterraneo orientale, ha tra i suoi fili conduttori quello degli enigmi, che celano e assieme rivelano il vissuto dei personaggi. Le numerose versioni romanze che se ne trassero lungo tutto il Medioevo ci mostrano strategie differenti nell’adattamento degli indovinelli al nuovo pubblico, talvolta facilitandone la comprensione, talvolta accentuandone l’oscurità. A partire da queste soluzioni è possibile rintracciare forme ulteriori di comunicazione enigmatica offerte dalla fonte latina, che spesso i volgarizzatori hanno saputo cogliere e rielaborare con abilità.
