Out of a population of 1804 outpatients with epilepsy, 152 reported a positive familial history for epilepsy. 30% of cases among primary generalized epilepsy (EGP) reported the occurrence of at least one non-febrile epileptic seizure in relatives of first to third degree, and 5.3% of cases among partial epilepsy (EP). Age at onset is below the age of 29 years in all the probands with EGP. In first degree relatives of EGP a positive family history was found in 56.2% as opposed to 34.4% of first degree relatives of EP.
