In 193 patients treated at San Paolo Hospital Epilepsy Center (102 with Primary Generalized Epilepsies and 91 with Partial Epilepsies) the medication was progressively reduced. Patients with Benign Partial Epilepsies were excluded from the study. During the reduction relapses occurred in 76 patients (42.2%). In the 41 cases in which the drug could be completely discontinued, there were relapses in 22 patients (54%). We could not find any significant prognostic criteria for the risk of relapse from the following parameters: sex, family history, type and combination of seizures, age of onset and duration of the disease. We could find only a significant correlation with the EEG before reduction and the risk of relapse in Primary Generalized Epilepsies, a data that needs to be confirmed with a prospective study.
