A population of 1,087 blood donors underwent anti-HTLV-I/II screening carried out by means of two different ELISA tests. Eleven of them showed reactivity to one of the two kits employed; after Western Blotting (WB), only one resulted positive: the others were either undeterminate (7) or negative (3). PCR for the detection of HTLV-DNA was performed on a sample of Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMC): the result was positive for all WB positive and undeterminate subjects. These data suggest that prevalence of HTLV-I/II infection in blood donors may be understimated.

Abstract
A population of 1,087 blood donors underwent anti-HTLV-I/II screening carried out by means of two different ELISA tests. Eleven of them showed reactivity to one of the two kits employed; after Western Blotting (WB), only one resulted positive: the others were either undeterminate (7) or negative (3). PCR for the detection of HTLV-DNA was performed on a sample of Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMC): the result was positive for all WB positive and undeterminate subjects. These data suggest that prevalence of HTLV-I/II infection in blood donors may be understimated.Pubblicazioni consigliate
