The use of topical corticosteroids in the treatment of atopic dermatitis is still the first choice in the majority of patients. In this study the efficacy as well as local and systemic side effects of a recent topical non-alogenated steroid, budesonide cream 0.025%, have been compared to alclometasone dipropionate cream 0.1%, a drug which is appreciated for its activity and tolerability. Forty children, to whom the two drugs were given at random, were treated twice a day for two weeks. Budesonide proved to be effective and well tolerated in most of the children. Both efficacy and lack of side-effects can be compared with the control cream. The introduction of new corticosteroids demonstrates that the potency and the incidence of side-effects are no longer correlated. However the possibility of allergic reactions to this class of drug is an experienced event. This circumstance must be carefully considered, mostly in the treatment of children in which a possible sensitization would result more dangerous than in adults.
