According to D.P.R.470/82, ARPA Piemonte-Dipartimento provinciale of Novara and Presidio Multizonale di Igiene e Prevenzione of Varese laboratories survey bathing water in Lake Maggiore. Every year, from May to September, twice a month, on the Piedmontese and Lombardy shore, 42 and 28 bathing places, respectively, are surveyed for chemical and bacteriological analysis. In this study, three microbial parameters (total coliform, fecal coliform and fecal streptococci) and final assessments on the quality of bathing water from 1988 to 1997 were analyzed. On the whole, Lake Maggiore is characterized by a good microbial quality, but we noticed evident differences on the two shores. Because of water purification projects, the majority of Piedmontese bathing places did not exceed legal limits and bathing permits ranged from 69% in 1990 to 89% in 1996. On Lombardy shore pollution discharge elimination program was late: most bathing places exceeded legal limits and bathing is permitted only on a few shores (0% (1993) - 45% (1997).
