We studied the effect of sunburn-spectrum ultraviolet (UVB) phototherapy on intractable pruritus of twenty five patients on hemodialysis for chronic renal failure. All the patients reported a marked and generalized disappearance in pruritus after a course of two weeks of treatment and two to eight exposure (mean 5). Patients remain in remission for a mean of at least 14 months (9 ± 3) after the treatment. Our experience confirms that ultraviolet phototherapy is an effective, safe and long lasting treatment for uremic pruritus.

Abstract
We studied the effect of sunburn-spectrum ultraviolet (UVB) phototherapy on intractable pruritus of twenty five patients on hemodialysis for chronic renal failure. All the patients reported a marked and generalized disappearance in pruritus after a course of two weeks of treatment and two to eight exposure (mean 5). Patients remain in remission for a mean of at least 14 months (9 ± 3) after the treatment. Our experience confirms that ultraviolet phototherapy is an effective, safe and long lasting treatment for uremic pruritus.Pubblicazioni consigliate
