A series of dried alkyd resins of known composition and alkyd resin compounds has been analysed by thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation-gas chromatography mass spectrometry (THM-GCMS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It has been proved that although THM-GCMS results at 770 °C and 610 °C are qualitatively similar, more reproducible peak areas can be obtained at the lower temperature. By means of FTIR it was not only possible to identify a resin as an alkyd but also to characterise the kind of polyalcohol used.

Abstract
A series of dried alkyd resins of known composition and alkyd resin compounds has been analysed by thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation-gas chromatography mass spectrometry (THM-GCMS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It has been proved that although THM-GCMS results at 770 °C and 610 °C are qualitatively similar, more reproducible peak areas can be obtained at the lower temperature. By means of FTIR it was not only possible to identify a resin as an alkyd but also to characterise the kind of polyalcohol used.Pubblicazioni consigliate
