Supported gold catalysts in the presence of dioxygen have shown high selectivity toward polyols monooxygenation. In fact, commercially useful products such as glycolic and lactic acids from, respectively, ethane-1,2-diol and propane-1,2-diol, can be advantageously obtained. Studies on the influence of the support and preparation methods are reported along with comparison tests involving commercial Pd and Pt catalysts.
