Several species of bacteria, classified as Gram-negative, cause a remarkable proportion of bovine mastitis, from moderate to peracute severity. The prevalence of environmental pathogens in general, and of Gram-negative in particular, has recently increased, despite plans aimed to reduce contagious germs infections. This demonstrates that the multifactorial nature of mastitis requires the widest view an the health and hygiene status of the herd. The risk factors to be considered are numerous and of different nature: here are proposed some of them, discussed in scientific items.

Abstract

Several species of bacteria, classified as Gram-negative, cause a remarkable proportion of bovine mastitis, from moderate to peracute severity. The prevalence of environmental pathogens in general, and of Gram-negative in particular, has recently increased, despite plans aimed to reduce contagious germs infections. This demonstrates that the multifactorial nature of mastitis requires the widest view an the health and hygiene status of the herd. The risk factors to be considered are numerous and of different nature: here are proposed some of them, discussed in scientific items.
