In Bern I was able to offer further thoughts and present the main points of interest for a better understanding of how foreign coins were used and defined in the European middle ages; coin finds must be checked against written sources, and the joined evidence has so far given new results, specifying different and defined uses (e.g., among others, for circulation or payment of taxes).

Abstract

This printed text reproduces my presentation at the Bern symposium (2000) on foreign and local coins: I was there invited to offer one the two opening methodological papers, as I had already promoted in 1997 the investigation of this topic, organizing in Cambridge a symposium which addressed for the first time foreign and local coins in medieval Europe (proceeding published in Milan 1999).
