Tufted hair folliculitis was first described by Hachiro Tagami in 1970 as 'numerous multiple hairs'. Smith and Sanderson in 1978 coined the term tufted hair folliculitis. To our knowledge, 61 cases have been described up to now. This is a rare scalp pathology, characterized by areas of scarring alopecia, with tufts of hair emerging from single follicular openings. Management of tufted hair folliculitis is difficult. This disorder usually has a chronic and relapsing course, with progressive development of scarring alopecia. Pharmacological treatments are usually unsatisfactory, while good results were obtained after a surgical excision of the involved areas. A case personally observed is described and the clinical-pathological features, etiopathogenesis and management of the tufted hair folliculitis condition are discussed.
