In the first report of this series, a strong influence of drug treatment on the neuropsychological performance of schizophrenic and affective patients was reported. In order to learn more about this problem, the neuropsychological characteristics of 21 drug-free and 57 drug-treated schizophrenics were compared with those of 52 controls homogeneous for age, sex and educational level. The results indicate that the performances of drug-treated patients were significantly poorer than that of both controls and drug-free patients. Age and educational level, even though relatively homogeneous, significantly affected the neuropsychological tests.

Abstract

In the first report of this series, a strong influence of drug treatment on the neuropsychological performance of schizophrenic and affective patients was reported. In order to learn more about this problem, the neuropsychological characteristics of 21 drug-free and 57 drug-treated schizophrenics were compared with those of 52 controls homogeneous for age, sex and educational level. The results indicate that the performances of drug-treated patients were significantly poorer than that of both controls and drug-free patients. Age and educational level, even though relatively homogeneous, significantly affected the neuropsychological tests.
