The infrared absorption spectra of the powdered samples and the Raman spectra of single crystals of MnCl2. 4H(2)O, MnBr2. 4H(2)O and FeCl2. 4H(2)O were recorded at liquid nitrogen temperature. Comparing the predicted and observed vibrational bands the spectra have been interpreted paying attention to the site symmetry of the metal atom and assuming only one formula unit in the Bravais cell.
