Access control basically restricts the actions or operations that a legitimate user of a computer system can perform. This article elucidates access control and its correlation with other security services such as auditing, authentication and administration. The access matrix model is reviewed as well as the various means to implementing the access matrix in practical systems. Moreover, access control policies commonly found in current systems are discussed and administration of access control is briefly considered.
