Abstract

From emf., E, measurements of the reversible cell Pt|H2(g, 1 atm)|HCl (m)|AgCl|Pt at 0.01 < m < 0.1 mol/kg in 70% (wt./wt.) ethanol-water solvent mixts. over the temp. range from -10 to +40°, the std. emf., E°, of the cell, the related thermodn. functions of the reaction, and the mean molal activity coeffs. of HCl were detd. The E data at 70% (wt./wt.) ethanol were combined with earlier data at ≤50% (wt./wt.) ethanol to be analyzed critically by a one-stage multilinear regression method leading to an optimized set of E° values for the range 0-70% (wt./wt.) ethanol which are essential for the assessment of pH stds. in these solvent media.
