Objectives: To compare friction generated during the sliding of different archwire types (0,014" NiTi, 0,018" NiTi, 0,018"x0,025" NiTi, 0,014" SS, 0,018" SS, 0,018"x0,025" SS), inside two different self-ligating appliances (bracket SmartClip™, 3M Unitek; bracket Quick® Forestadent), simulating in vitro different situations of disalignment, in-out and torque. Materials and methods: All tests were executed by an universal testing machine. For each test a mean of the friction values was calculated. Results and conclusions: Resistance to sliding is proportional to wire size. NiTi archwires produce less friction than stainless steel ones. Quick brackets generate less friction than SmartClip brackets. Friction also increase with an increase in alignment and in-out, it doesn't increase with an increase in torque with round wires, it also increases with an increase in torque with rectangular ones.
