A telescope of forty silicon detectors has been designed as active target for lifetime measurements of charmed particles. Along with the target, a low noise data acquisition system suitable for operation at counting rates beyond 106 particles per second has been developed. The target, successfully employed in a high energy expiriment at the CERN SPS, is described in this paper, which also provides detailed discussion about the design criteria and the performancesof the signal processing adopted to cope with the experiment constraints.

Abstract
A telescope of forty silicon detectors has been designed as active target for lifetime measurements of charmed particles. Along with the target, a low noise data acquisition system suitable for operation at counting rates beyond 106 particles per second has been developed. The target, successfully employed in a high energy expiriment at the CERN SPS, is described in this paper, which also provides detailed discussion about the design criteria and the performancesof the signal processing adopted to cope with the experiment constraints.Pubblicazioni consigliate
