The aim of this work consists in analyzing the consequences of RME on the nasal septum. The sample included 140 patients presenting a skeletal maxillary transverse constriction. Two groups were constructed. The first group containing 100 patients presenting a septal deviation more than 1 mm was treated by a Hyrax expander, to correct the transverse dimension. The second group containing 40 patients was not treated because the patients were under pharmacological treatment for neurovascular headache. The protocol of activation in group 1 consisted by activation of the transverse screw one-quarter turn twice a day for 15 days. Then the appliance was left in place for passive retention. The skeletal variations induced by RME have been made through cephalometric evaluations obtained before therapy (T0), at the removal of the appliance (T1) and after 6 months of manteinance (T2). A lapse of time of six months passed between T0 and T1. This study demonstrates how RME can increase the length of the septum, improving its possible deviations and growth disturbance. Palatal expansion technique is a valid therapeutic option, which allows to increase nasal cavity volume and it can also have a favorable effects on the growth of the maxillary complex.
Obiettivo. Lo scopo di questo lavoro consiste nell’analizzare le conseguenze dell’RME sul setto nasale. Metodi. Il campione include 140 pazienti presentanti ipoplasia scheletrica del mascellare superiore sul piano trasversale. I pazienti sono stati suddivisi in due gruppi; il primo contenente 100 pazienti presentanti una deviazione del setto maggiore di 1 mm e trattati con espansore rapido del palato tipo Hyrax, il secondo gruppo composto da 40 pazienti non trattati in quanto sotto terapia farmacologica per cefalea neurovascolare. Il protocollo di attivazione dell’espansore utilizzato sul gruppo 1 consiste nell’attivazione della vite trasversale di un quattro di giro due volte al giorno per 15 giorni. L’apparecchiatura è stata poi lasciata in situ a scopo contentivo. Le variazioni scheletriche indotte dall’RME sono state valutate mediante analisi cefalometrica prima della terapia (T0), alla rimozione dell’apparecchiatura (T1) e dopo sei mesi di mantenimento (T2). Un intervallo di tempo di sei mesi è intercorso tra T0 e T1. Risultati. Lo studio ha dimostrato come l’RME aumenti la lunghezza del setto nasale, migliorando le sue possibili deviazioni e i disturbi della crescita. Conclusioni. La tecnica di espansione palatale è una valida opzione terapeutica che consente di aumentare il volume delle cavità nasali e avere effetti favorevoli sulla crescita del complesso mascellare
