Vibrational spectroscopies, and FTIR spectroscopy in particular, have a very large range of application both in pharmaceutical and in materials chemistry. In this work, two different, innovative applications of FTIR spectroscopy are discussed. In the first one, Imaging IR Spectroscopy is used in the identification of the form of a polymorphic API in a pharmaceutical cream. This IR radiation sampling method allows to couple images in the visible range to chemical images: a single IR spectrum corresponds to each point of the image, and this coupling allows a real study of the polymorph in the cream without its extraction from the matrix. Identification is performed by comparison with the standard spectra - acquired in the same analytical conditions - of known solid state forms. The data obtained by IR Spectroscopy induced to use also Raman imaging in order to compare the identification results and the applicability of both the techniques. The second application provides the use of Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform (DRIFT) Spectroscopy and Reflection Absorption InfraRed Spectroscopy in the screening of organosilane films, deposited on different metallic surface for a protective aim. The purpose of the study is to evaluate which films have been deposited on the metal surface and, then to qualitatively investigate the degrees of polymerization. Also UV-Vis Spectroscopy is used to characterize the monomeric starting solutions, from which the deposition for immersion and thermal treatment is obtained Joining these techniques allows to define that the oligomerization happens in solution. On the metal surface both the organic and the inorganic portions give rise to polymerization.
