This paper deals with the instrumental alternation exhibited by the Japanese predicate utu “shoot” as in (1) Keikan-ga pisutoru-de hannin-o utu and (2) Keikan-ga hannin-ni(mukatte) pisutoru-o utu, and, to a lesser degree, with the locative alternations of horu “dig”, as in (3) Hatake-ni ana-o hotta, (4) Hatake-o hotta and (5) Hatake-kara tubo-no hahen-o hotta. All these alternations are analysed on the basis of the causal chain model developed by William Croft over Talmy's force-dynamic and Jackendoff's localist approaches. The occurrences of the members of the instrumental causal chain [te (hand) ---- pisutoru (handgun) --- tama (bullet)] in (1) and (2) are discussed in depth in relation to the notion of granularity, so as to formulate a rule predicting their acceptability as Subjects, Objects or oblique adjuncts. Detailed geometrical notations are provided for each syntactic pattern. A table of case syncretism in Japanese is included. All examples are unglossed.

Abstract
All examples are unglossed.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
