Anthropological and paleopathological analyses performed on more than 400 skeletons of a northern Italian necropolis from Bolgare showed aspects of the demographic and health status of this Langobard population of the VII – IX century A.D. located in the Bergamo province. Results proved the population to be heterogeneous with males, females, adults and subadults. The population seems to be composed of more groups, individuals with northern or eastern (uralic) european features and on the other hand individuals with central european or mediterranean characteristics. The first may be indicative of Langobardian migrations (along with the high stature estimations); the second could be considered “autochtonous”, bearing features more typical features of northern italian populations. From a palaeopathological point of view the study showed the presence of tubercolosis, gout, D.I.S.H. and degenerative patologies particularly on the pelvis and spinal column. These results constitute one of the main sources of anthropological information on Langobard populations in Northern Italy.
