The Oral Approach or Situational Language Teaching (oral-situational method in this study) is an English teaching approach that was developed by British applied linguists in the 1930s to the 1960s. It is important in the history of foreign language methods because it had a large impact on language courses and was still used in Italy in the 1980s. This study not only analyses the historical context in which this method developed but also its linguistic and psycholinguistic background. What is language, how we acquire it, how it is taught according to the oral-situational method are some of the questions this work tries to answer. Various examples of teaching materials are taken into consideration.

Abstract
The Oral Approach or Situational Language Teaching (oral-situational method in this study) is an English teaching approach that was developed by British applied linguists in the 1930s to the 1960s. It is important in the history of foreign language methods because it had a large impact on language courses and was still used in Italy in the 1980s. This study not only analyses the historical context in which this method developed but also its linguistic and psycholinguistic background. What is language, how we acquire it, how it is taught according to the oral-situational method are some of the questions this work tries to answer. Various examples of teaching materials are taken into consideration.Pubblicazioni consigliate
