Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major concern for public health; It has been recognised as an occupational hazard for people working in pig herds and it is also responsible for nosocomial infections. Although clinicians are currently concerned primarily with MRSA infections, methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) infections can be present with similar epidemiologic and clinical characteristics. Community-acquired (CA)- MRSA strains contain Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) genes, a toxic bicomponent with the ability to destroy leukocytes, primarily associated with skin infections. According to a large multinational clinical trial, (PVL) + S. aureus isolates from community in Europe are more likely to be MSSA than MRSA. Aim of this study was to compare protein profiles of MSSA (PVL) + and (PVL) - in order to detect proteins and modifications potentially related to infections and toxin production.
