The essay examines two works by E. Wharton, Italian Villas and Their Gardens and Italian Backgrounds, works which indicate the influence of Jakob Burckhardt on her evaluation of the art of the Italian Renaissance; Burckhardt's inspirational role is also to be seen in Wharton's assessment of the Italian landscape, its monuments, and art, as expression of the national culture.
