This article concentrates on Thorkild Hansen’s works Det lykkelige Arabien (1962) and the so-called Slaves’ Trilogy (1967-70) to study the author’s technique in intertwining history and fiction. In Hansen’s “factual narrative” the sphere of fiction seems to prevail on two levels, i.e. the presentation of the characters and the description and treatment of the setting. With proper devices the account of past events is “emplotted” in such a way as to organize a discourse concerning contemporary issues, on the one hand, and universal topics, on the other.

Abstract

This article concentrates on Thorkild Hansen’s works Det lykkelige Arabien (1962) and the so-called Slaves’ Trilogy (1967-70) to study the author’s technique in intertwining history and fiction. In Hansen’s “factual narrative” the sphere of fiction seems to prevail on two levels, i.e. the presentation of the characters and the description and treatment of the setting. With proper devices the account of past events is “emplotted” in such a way as to organize a discourse concerning contemporary issues, on the one hand, and universal topics, on the other.
