In their introductive chapter to a special volume of the economic section of the Italian Sociological Association, in which the best papers presented at the annual conference of the Association on the general topic 'The process of development in the recent socio-economic approaches', held in Cagliari in 2009, are collected, the authors highlight the new multidimensional meanings that the concept of development came to assume in the past decades, after the classical period of the sociological foundation.
