Introduction. Our previous studies demonstrated that open ear combination prototype (COMBI) hearing instrument, was very useful in the tinnitus treatment. This instrument consists of an amplification part with advanced signal processing such as multi band wide dynamic rage compression, digital feedback suppression and noise reduction, and an advanced sound generator part and volume control (VC) for masking sound adjustment. This combination has been chosen to obtain optimal compensation for the subjects hearing loss and provide the most effective sound enrichment for use in TRT. Objectives. Aim of this study is to evaluate if a COMBI prototype without VC can deliver the same results than COMBI with VC. Our hypothesis is that the missing of volume control doesn’t affect the sound treatment efficacy while the RITE can improves the outcomes. Methods. 14 tinnitus patients were divided in two groups: the first group was using COMBI with VC, the second using the new COMBI without VC. THI and VAS were administered at the beginning, and they will be administered after 3 months. Results. The subjects using the COMBI showed significant improvements in all questionnaires without differences between the two groups. However, subjectively the VC was appreciated by the patients. Hearing thresholds and ages had no effects on these results. Conclusions. Our findings show that the volume control could improve the final subjective outcome according to the TRT procedure.
