The Work Ability Index is a valid measure to assess subjective and objective aspects of workers’functional capacity. This functional capacity is affected by adverse and frustrating working condition. Moreover it is generally lower in females than in males due, probably, to lower tolerance for physical and cognitive loads, higher family responsabilities and lower influence and support to career. Random Forest Analysis demonstrated, in a population of 3449 italian female nurses, an important adverse effect of Effort Reward Imbalance, Overcommitment, Family/work conflict and Work/family conflict on Work ability. Considering the shortage of registered nurses and the extended years at work before aging pension healthcare organizations should intervene to improve the value of these personnel and to administrate adequately their time of work and life.
