This article investigate the relationship between constitutional reforms and agricultural policy in a large sample of developing and developed countries, over the 1955-2005 period. Controlling for standard determinants of the protection level, we show that political reforms toward democracy significantly increase agricultural protection and support. Interesting, the magnitude of this constitutional reform effect is strongly heterogeneous across different forms of democracy, in a way quite consistent with theory.
