The organization of selection programme in the Carora dairy cattle breed in Venezuela is described. This paper summarizes the activities developed in the last fifteen years that include: the re-organization of the Breeders Association, the technical support to the breed management and the current selection scheme. A description of research carried out to support the program was given. At the beginning of the program the Breeders Association developed a methodology for the animals' identification and organized the management of all information. New criteria were adopted for the management of the Herdbook. Results of the program concern the increase of herds taking part to the program, the annual genetic gain of 35 kg of milk, the use of Carora bulls both as a pure breed for milk production and for crossbreeding.
