At the heart of universal chronicles, a literary genre that was widespread in the Middle Ages, lies the idea that human history can be represented by a single narrative, generally from a providentialist perspective. In order to satisfy this vision, it was necessary to include even seemingly anomalous elements, such as non-Christian peoples. This essay presents some examples of how, between the 13th and 14th centuries, universal chronicles reacted to the emergence of a new people, the Mongols, and a new geographical horizon, concerning Central and Eastern Asia, and were able to incorporate them into the traditional historical and geographical framework.

Abstract
At the heart of universal chronicles, a literary genre that was widespread in the Middle Ages, lies the idea that human history can be represented by a single narrative, generally from a providentialist perspective. In order to satisfy this vision, it was necessary to include even seemingly anomalous elements, such as non-Christian peoples. This essay presents some examples of how, between the 13th and 14th centuries, universal chronicles reacted to the emergence of a new people, the Mongols, and a new geographical horizon, concerning Central and Eastern Asia, and were able to incorporate them into the traditional historical and geographical framework.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
