Il Baretti dopo Baretti: sulla fortuna italiana di A dictionary of the English and Italian languages

As a consequence of the so-called anglomania – that is, the great admiration that the English world aroused in Italy in the eighteenth century – from the final decades of the century the English language also began to be studied in Italy in a more serious and widespread way. In this socio-cultural context, a prominent role was played by Giuseppe Baretti, who was equally committed to promoting the study of the Italian language and literary culture in Great Britain and to encouraging Italians to study English. The present contribution aims to show how Baretti’s Italian-English, English-Italian bilingual dictionary – within the broader context of its long publishing success in Britain, spanning from 1760 to 1928 – was also positively received in Italy, albeit for a shorter period: between 1787 and 1832, it was published in Venice, Florence, Bologna, and Leghorn, with various, though not radical, adaptations.

Come conseguenza della cosiddetta anglomania, ossia la grande ammirazione che il mondo inglese venne a suscitare in Italia nel Settecento, a partire dagli ultimi decenni del secolo anche la lingua inglese cominciò a essere studiata in Italia in modo più serio e diffuso. In tale contesto socioculturale, un ruolo rilevante venne svolto da Giuseppe Baretti, parimenti impegnato a promuovere lo studio della lingua e della cultura letteraria italiana in Gran Bretagna e a incoraggiare gli italiani a studiare l’inglese. Il presente contributo intende mostrare come il dizionario bilingue italiano-inglese e inglese-italiano del Baretti – all’interno del più ampio contesto del suo lungo successo editoriale in Gran Bretagna, che va dal 1760 al 1928 – fu accolto positivamente in Italia, sebbene per un più breve periodo: tra il 1787 e il 1832, venne pubblicato a Venezia, Firenze, Bologna e Livorno, con vari, anche se non radicali, adattamenti.
