This paper proposes ways of studying premodern Arabic narratives that take into account its performative aspects. Starting from a story in al-Tanūkhī’s (d. 384/994) Deliverance Follows Adversity (al-Faraj baʿd al-Shidda), I investigate clues of how the story may have been read aloud and performed before an audience. In particular, I illustrate how a performer may enhance the representation of space and movement in the text, triggering a specific visualisation of events and driving the audience’s response to the narrative.

Abstract
This paper proposes ways of studying premodern Arabic narratives that take into account its performative aspects. Starting from a story in al-Tanūkhī’s (d. 384/994) Deliverance Follows Adversity (al-Faraj baʿd al-Shidda), I investigate clues of how the story may have been read aloud and performed before an audience. In particular, I illustrate how a performer may enhance the representation of space and movement in the text, triggering a specific visualisation of events and driving the audience’s response to the narrative.Pubblicazioni consigliate
