Bilateral Supracondylar Process in a Subadult in the Late Antique Age: A Case Report

During the excavation procedures for the railway trait Napoli-Cancello, in the city of Afragola (Naples), several burials dating back to the Late Antique Age were found. One of them was an amphora burial (enchytrismòs) and contained the skeletal remains of a subadult individual affected by bilateral supracondylar process. Supracondylar process is a rare anatomical variant, especially if bilateral, characterized by a bony protrusion on the anteromedial surface of the humerus in the distal third of the diaphysis, with a reported prevalence below 1.0%. To the best of our knowledge, this case represents the earliest published archaeological occurrence of bilateral supracondylar process in Italy (4th century ad) and the first reported in Southern Italy.
