In recent years, the world economy has entered a phase of mounting conflict, marked by trade wars, financial sanctions, and geopolitical tensions. This article interprets these dynamics through the concept of debt imperialism, understood as a configuration in which the imperial centre sustains persistent external deficits by issuing financial liabilities that are demanded internationally. Starting from a tripolar model – debtor centre, export-oriented industrial semi-periphery, and dependent periphery – the article analyses international data for the period 1975-2023. The analysis shows that the economic and technological rise of the semi-peripheries, particularly China, has opened a phase of contestation of the centre’s financial hegemony and induced it to mobilise its levers of power to defend its position in the world economy.

Abstract
In recent years, the world economy has entered a phase of mounting conflict, marked by trade wars, financial sanctions, and geopolitical tensions. This article interprets these dynamics through the concept of debt imperialism, understood as a configuration in which the imperial centre sustains persistent external deficits by issuing financial liabilities that are demanded internationally. Starting from a tripolar model – debtor centre, export-oriented industrial semi-periphery, and dependent periphery – the article analyses international data for the period 1975-2023. The analysis shows that the economic and technological rise of the semi-peripheries, particularly China, has opened a phase of contestation of the centre’s financial hegemony and induced it to mobilise its levers of power to defend its position in the world economy.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
