«Nostrae fidei praecentor». Il centurione in veste ebraica nelle Crocifissioni medievali: radici testuali di un motivo iconografico

The centurion who recognises Jesus’ divinity is a constant presence in late medieval depictions of the Crucifixion. The figure is often portrayed with Jewish attributes, although in the Gospels he is identified only by his role as a Roman soldier. Drawing on works of art from Lombardy and Piedmont, it can be ascertained that the centurion’s appearance can be identical to that of a Jewish priest, without compromising the character’s correct identification in the eyes of a medieval viewer. Furthermore, it has emerged that the practice of depicting the centurion with Jewish attributes first appeared in works of art that show Byzantine influence, in which the soldier wears a tallit. Finally, a comparison between visual and textual sources has allowed to identify the roots of this motif in the Augustinian doctrine of Jewish witness.

Il centurione che riconosce la divinità di Gesù è una presenza costante nelle raffigurazioni bassomedievali della Crocifissione. Il personaggio è spesso rappresentato con attributi giudaici, nonostante nelle narrazioni evangeliche egli sia identificato soltanto col suo ruolo di militare romano. Partendo da opere d’arte lombarde e piemontesi, si rileva che l’aspetto del centurione può essere in tutto coincidente con quello di un sacerdote ebreo, senza compromettere agli occhi dell’osservatore coevo la corretta identificazione del personaggio. Inoltre, è emerso come l’uso di raffigurare il centurione con attributi giudaici compaia inizialmente in opere d’arte d’influenza bizantina, nelle quali il milite porta il tallit. Da ultimo, il raffronto tra le fonti visuali e quelle testuali ha permesso di identificare nella dottrina agostiniana della testimonianza ebraica le radici dell’iconografia del centurione in veste d’ebreo.
