Abstract

‘Quotations’ in the Quae sunt quae · The Quae sunt quae is investigated, an early medieval ‘exegetical grammar’, linked to the insular tradition. Quotations featuring in the text are examined in detail, not only scriptural and pagan, but also patristic and pseudopatristic. Expectedly, direct reading is arguable for Donatus (on whom pagan quotations are drawn), for the Bible, and perhaps for some works by Jerome and Augustine; on the other hand, a few sententiae attributed to Augustine, Gregory the Great, and Orosius (esp. in the section de voce), that are found both in Quae sunt quae and in other works aimed at the education of monks, priests, lectores, are possibly drawn on materials that were circulated among different scriptoria (in schedulae, thematic dossiers, glosses). Moreover, some emendations to the Quae sunt quae are proposed, based on the collation of the manuscripts bearing it.
