The link between autoimmunity and cancer could be viewed as either due to independent events, concurrent or sequential, or an autoimmune manifestation of malignancy. This review will discuss the relationship between autoimmune disease and breast cancer, and the potential inference of such immune disorder on treatment of breast cancer. Furthermore, issues of biology and prognosis of breast cancer in the context of a deregulation of the immune system is discussed. We will also highlight the different therapeutic approaches needed for breast cancer in patients with underlying autoimmune disease.
