The chapter reconstructs the intellectual connection between E. Herbert Norman and Colonel Charles L. Kades. Norman, distinguished historian and diplomat, served as a GHQ/SCAP official in the months leading up to the elaboration of the constitution draft by the SCAP, in which Kades played a key role. A particular interpretation of the “feudal remnants” in postwar Japan, which they shared, will be discussed as evidence of their ideological alignment. Secondary sources and archival material will be investigated to contribute to the understanding of the intellectual milieu that surrounded the formulation of the pacifist principle embodied in the Article 9 of the Japanese constitution.

Abstract
The chapter reconstructs the intellectual connection between E. Herbert Norman and Colonel Charles L. Kades. Norman, distinguished historian and diplomat, served as a GHQ/SCAP official in the months leading up to the elaboration of the constitution draft by the SCAP, in which Kades played a key role. A particular interpretation of the “feudal remnants” in postwar Japan, which they shared, will be discussed as evidence of their ideological alignment. Secondary sources and archival material will be investigated to contribute to the understanding of the intellectual milieu that surrounded the formulation of the pacifist principle embodied in the Article 9 of the Japanese constitution.Pubblicazioni consigliate
