– This article addresses the nature of money from a long-term historical and critical perspective, challenging consolidated functionalist and evolutionary interpretations. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach that combines economic history, sociology, and anthropology, the paper conceptualises money as a social technology and a historically embedded institution, shaped by practices, trust relations, and forms of governance. Particular attention is paid to monetary pluralism in the past, with a focus on early modern exchange fairs and “virtual” units of account used to coordinate international payments. Building on this genealogical framework, the paper critically examines contemporary cryptocurrencies, highlighting the tension between their monetary aspirations and their predominantly speculative use. The historical comparison shows that cryptocurrencies today tend to function primarily as volatile financial assets rather than as stable means of payment, raising broader questions about the limits of privately issued money lacking collective governance.

Abstract
The historical comparison shows that cryptocurrencies today tend to function primarily as volatile financial assets rather than as stable means of payment, raising broader questions about the limits of privately issued money lacking collective governance.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
