Cavitation is widely recognized as a powerful tool for process intensification, yet its industrial penetration remains far below what decades of laboratory and pilot-scale research would suggest. Both acoustic and hydrodynamic cavitation can generate extreme microenvironments, characterized by localized hot spots, shock waves, microjets, and highly reactive species, but their large-scale deployment is still confined to a limited number of applications. Recent analyses indicate that this gap does not primarily stem from technological immaturity, but rather from the lack of a clear and quantitative framework to determine when cavitation represents the most effective and economically viable option compared to competing technologies. Herein, we propose a quantitative roadmap that reframes cavitation technologies through a rigorous yet practical figure of merit, defined as the ratio between technical impact and cost of ownership (COO) [1]. This metric integrates the beneficial effects of cavitation—such as radical generation, interfacial activation, particle disruption, and intensified mass transfer—with its inherent drawbacks, including power attenuation, heat dissipation, material erosion, and operational energy demand. By normalizing these contributions to the treated flow, the framework enables a coherent comparison across transient acoustic cavitation, high-frequency acoustic fields, active and passive hydrodynamic devices, and hybrid systems combining cavitation with advanced oxidation processes, ozone, photocatalysis, or flotation. Drawing on industrial case studies ranging from sewage sludge disintegration (ULTRAWAVES, Weber Entec) to scalable hydrodynamic reactors, including multijet nozzles, rotor–stator units, and vortex-diode technologies, we demonstrate how this figure-of-merit approach identifies the operational domains where each configuration excels and where its limitations emerge [1]. Acoustic cavitation offers high precision and strong chemical effects, whereas hydrodynamic cavitation provides robustness and scalability. The most promising route forward, however, arises when these technologies are treated not as competing alternatives but as complementary tools. Based on this analysis, three priorities are identified for next-generation cavitation technologies: (i) the adoption of standardized, quantitative metrics for both technical impact and cost; (ii) the development of hybrid acoustic–hydrodynamic systems that exploit complementary strengths to enhance radical formation, interfacial phenomena, and energy efficiency; and (iii) the identification of “missing applications” where cavitation’s unique multi-energy release can unlock new industrial process routes. By shifting the discussion from qualitative descriptors to measurable and comparable performance, this work provides a practical guide for accelerating the industrial deployment of cavitation-driven technologies.
