Introducing square roots might be a complex challenge in learning mathematics, bringing both cognitive and emotional difficul- ties and challenging established beliefs. Some- times, the topic is taught mechanically, without providing models or leaving room for questions, doubts, or curiosity. This contribution describes a hands-on workshop carried out in seventh grade classes of Italian lower secondary school, inspired by Ausubel’s theory of meaningful learning, which promotes the integration of new concepts with prior knowledge in a motivating and collaborative en- vironment. Through the folding of origami mod- els and didactical games, students can build a solid understanding of square roots and their properties. The workshop, which was also tested with a blind student, fosters active learning, shared knowledge construction, and metacogni- tive reflection.
Talvolta l’argomento viene proposto in modo meccanico, senza fornire rappresentazioni concrete e senza lasciare spazio a domande, dubbi o curiosità.
