Vanni Scheiwiller (1934-1999) was a significant “small” Italian publisher specializing in art, criticism, poetry, and narrative books. Part of the archive of his publishing house is now preserved at APICE, an archive run by the University of Milan. Through an analysis of archival documents, the paper aims to highlight Scheiwiller’s outstanding contribution to a widespread knowledge of Polish literature in Italy, achieved through the support of his wife, artist Alina Kalczyńska, and a renowned scholar and translator, Pietro Marchesani. The article not only underscores Scheiwiller’s merits, such as having published Szymborska’s verses before she won the Nobel prize, but also refers to his unfulfilled publishing projects and his passionate (and sometimes naive) way of running a publishing business.

Abstract
Vanni Scheiwiller (1934-1999) was a significant “small” Italian publisher specializing in art, criticism, poetry, and narrative books. Part of the archive of his publishing house is now preserved at APICE, an archive run by the University of Milan. Through an analysis of archival documents, the paper aims to highlight Scheiwiller’s outstanding contribution to a widespread knowledge of Polish literature in Italy, achieved through the support of his wife, artist Alina Kalczyńska, and a renowned scholar and translator, Pietro Marchesani. The article not only underscores Scheiwiller’s merits, such as having published Szymborska’s verses before she won the Nobel prize, but also refers to his unfulfilled publishing projects and his passionate (and sometimes naive) way of running a publishing business.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
